“Hope Springs Eternal” at the Preakness this Saturday

Preakness SusansThe 140th running of the Preakness this Saturday at Pimlico promises as always to be an exciting race.  The term “hope springs eternal” always comes to mind for race fans in the second leg of the grueling Triple Crown trail,  when the Derby winner gets to prove his, or her, mettle and stamina.  Combine that mettle and stamina with a sprinkling of good fortune and luck from the Racing Gods and fans may get to see a Triple Crown winner this year.  Hope so!

The physical and mental stress for horses competing in these three major racing events can be compared to a human marathon runner competing in 3 marathons over the same time frame.  Imagine having to be at your best on May 2, and then get 13 days to “recover”, then be at your best again on May 16, and then get 20 days to “recover” and peak again on June 6th.  Are you ready?

It can be done, but it is not advised for most of us mere mortals.  As the old racetrack adage goes, “there are a thousand ways to lose a race”.

Over the 140 years of the Preakness running, a number of equine race training aspects have not changed.  Basically, have a fit horse that is not over trained and has recovered well and is stronger from their previous start.  Ah, recovery and strength, the proverbial magic bullets necessary for the next win!

Actually, the recovery phase ends 72 hours after competition, and then the all important pre-event phase begins.  The success of maintaining strength and returning to form for horses in the pre-event phase will determine who gets to wear the Black Eyed Susan blanket. (You know, Black Eyed Susans are not yet in bloom, close inspection shows they are painted daisies, but I digress..)

One aspect of race training that has changed in 140 years, is the ability for modern trainers to incorporate 21st Century modern science and technology in assisting their horses in the pre-event training stage.

Go ahead, ask me, “Don what are the secrets to success and the the 21st Century pre-event solution for equine athletes?”
